How to Clean Your Outdoor Cushion

Table of Contents

When cushions are placed in an outdoor environment for a long period of time, even the most stain-resistant materials are inevitably “attacked” by dust, bird droppings, or oil stains. These stains not only affect the overall aesthetics of the furniture but can also shorten its lifespan. Here’s everything you need to know about how to clean outdoor furniture cushions. Before you start a new year of outdoor life, why not follow this guide and give your cushions a thorough clean!

Tools You'll Need:

Always read the product instructions provided by the manufacturer before preparing your cleaning tools. Different outdoor cushion materials may require different cleaning methods; some removable cushion covers are suited for machine washing, while others may require the use of specific cleaners. Here are some general cleaning tools.

  • Warm water
  • Mild soapy water or specialized cleaner
  • Bucket
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Garden hose
  • White vinegar or a mold cleaner (if needed)

Full Guide: How to Clean Outdoor Furniture Cushions?

Here is a cleaning video and step-by-step guide for cleaning outdoor cushions:

Step 1: Remove Surface Debris

Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust, wood chips, and other debris from the surface of the cushion. Be careful to avoid the vacuum cleaner directly contacting decorations on the cushions, such as tassels, buttons, etc., so that they do not pull loose or become damaged.

Step 2: Clean Cushions with Cleaning Solution

Mix water and cleaning solution in a bucket at a ratio of 3:1. Using a soft bristle brush dipped in the cleaning solution, gently rub it along the grain of the fabric on the surface of the cushion. When encountering a stain, let the cleaning solution sit on the stain for a few minutes to help loosen and break down the stain, then brush again.

Step 3: Remove Tough Stains on Outdoor Cushions

How do you remove stains from outdoor cushions? If your cushions are stained with stubborn stains like mold, bird droppings, or oil, the conventional cleaning methods above may not be enough to completely remove them. For these tough stains, we need a deeper cleaning method.

For Mold and Mildew:

Remove mold from outdoor cushions with white vinegar or a mildew remover. Mix a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water. Spray it on the mold. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub the mold with a soft-bristle brush. If using a mold cleaner, dilute it before scrubbing.

How to Clean Outdoor Furniture Cushions

For Bird droppings:

When dealing with bird droppings, first distinguish between wet and dry. For dry bird droppings, first remove the solids with cardboard or a knife. For wet bird droppings, first absorb the excess liquid with a paper towel, then scrape off the remaining bird droppings. Next, mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap with 2 cups of water and spray the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it clean.

For Oil stains:

Sprinkle baking soda on the oil stain and press gently to cover it completely. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrape off the baking soda with a soft brush or cardboard. Then clean it with a soft brush dipped in soapy water or detergent solution.

Step 4: Wash the Cushions Thoroughly

How to wash outdoor cushions? Place it on a flat surface and wash with a hose at medium to high pressure. Apply water evenly over the entire cushion to ensure the detergent is completely rinsed away.

Step 5: Dry the Cushions Completely

Gently press and squeeze the cushion with a clean towel or cloth to remove excess moisture. Avoid applying excessive pressure and damaging the cushion’s shape. Then, lay it flat in a well-ventilated area to dry. To prevent fading or deformation, keep out of direct sunlight. Ensure the cushion is completely dry before use.

Outdoor Furniture Cushions Care Tips

  • Clean Regularly: Vacuum your cushions weekly to remove dust and debris. Wipe any stains immediately to prevent buildup.
  • Store in a Cool Place: Protect your outdoor furniture cushions from direct sunlight to prevent fading and fabric degradation.
  • Keep Dry: Ensure your cushions are completely dry between use and storage. This prevents mold and odors.
  • Invest in Protective Covers: Cover your cushions with a waterproof cover or cushion protector when not in use.
